The
first step at a fire scene is to calm the fears of those affected.
Next, Denali Clean tests the smoke to see which of the following
types of fire took place.
| |
Behavior
of Smoke |
Hot
smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
|
Smoke
flows through plumbing systems, using holes around pipes to
go from floor to floor. |
The
type of smoke will greatly affect the restoration process. |
 |
Types
of Smoke |
Wet
Smoke -
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke
webs are more difficult to clean. |
Dry
Smoke - Fast
burning at high temperatures.
Protein
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes.
Extreme pungent odor. |
Fuel
Oil Soot -
Furnace puff backs cause fuel oil soot.
Other
- Tear gas,
print powder, extinguisher residue . |
Lingering
odors can be a major problem of fire restoration or water damage
cleanup. There are basically four distinct deodorizing methods*:
The first three are methods that will “mask” odors.
The fourth is the only technique that will eliminate the odors
caused by fire, and water damage.
-
Wet-Fogging Method. This method is very effective
when the smell of smoke is light or applied immediately after
the fire a extinguished. The deodorant is atomized, so the
fine mist readily permeates the smallest openings where odors
are trapped. Expert application is vital to avoid a damaging
residue
-
Dry-Fogging
Method. This method is used more often because
it does not leave a residue and circulates in the air
more easily than a mist which is emitted from a wet fogger.
-
Crystals.
Specially formulated crystals are strategically placed
in the air handling systems and/or dead air spaces after
the cleaning procedures have been completed. The crystals
absorb odors and emit a pleasant aroma, which is not over
powering.
-
Ozone
Restoration-A powerful,permanent deodorization
method is the only known process that actually
eliminates odors rather than “masking”
them. Smoke odors are converted into harmless,
odorless carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Ozone
is also effective for eliminating mold, mildew
and related odors.
Ozone is usually introduced through an air moving
device or into an air duct system. Note: Ozone
may not be used on natural rubber.
*For safety and health issues:
people, animals, and plants must be removed from
the area during the deodorization process (except
when using crystals)
|
SOOT
HAPPENS and
when it
does a successful structural clean-up following a fire can be a
very labor intensive project.
Smoke and soot are both fast traveling and persistent, quickly coating
every square inch of the affected area.
To insure thorough cleaning and deodorization of the damaged area,
all walls, ceilings, floors and every surface in between must be
thoroughly treated.
To
effectively clean soot residue, the following two factors
must be considered in determining appropriate cleaning methods:
|
The
Type of Soot: Different materials release different
types of residue, when burned. For example, fire soot from
synthetics (plastics), can create chlorides causing soot to
be corrosive, requiring lubrication and different cleaning
methods than soot residue from burned wood. |
The
Type Surface To Be Cleaned: Most surfaces can be
cleaned and/or washed with vulcanized dry sponges. Although,
certain surfaces, like textured ceilings, are not “cleanable”
unless the residue is light enough to be vacuumed. In cases
of heavily sooted painted areas, all surfaces must be cleaned
and sealed before re-painting, or the soot will eventually
“bleed through” destroying the paint job.
|
Denali Clean uses a number of specially formulated products designed
for specific cleaning tasks: A “no-run” disinfecting
cleaner; an alcohol-based sealer with special resins; and a cleaning
solvent specially designed for use against synthetic residues (plastics,
etc.), and more.

CLEAN
AIRDUCTS ARE A MAJOR PORTION OF STRUCTURAL RESTORATION , IT
IS ESSENTIAL TO CLEAN THE AIR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL BREATHE
AFTER THE DAMAGE HAS OCCURED. HERE WE HAVE LISTED WHY AND HOW
AIR DUCT CLEANING IS IMPORTANT AND PREFORMED.
Emergency treatment of the tainted
air handling system is critical. Soot and odor-causing elements
will travel through the duct work, causing contamination throughout
the entire structure. During a fire, airborne
contaminates such as soot and other odors can become trapped
in the structure’s air handling system duct work. In most
cases, cleaning and deodorizing the equipment is much less expensive
and timely compared to replacing the system.
There are also long-term considerations, untreated air handling
systems will also serve as a source of future health and odor
problems. Early and comprehensive treatment of the air handling
systems are important first steps to any water and/or smoke
damage clean up.
|
•
The air duct system is back-sealed, and the air handling unit
is turned off.
• In the case of water damage, the system is pre-fogged
with a specially formulated fungicide, killing mold and mildew.
• Filter material is then placed over registers and
air return vents.
• Next, a hole is cut in the air handling system above
the A-coil, and the supply ducts are sealed. (On larger systems
more than one hole is necessary.)
• While the air handling system is on, a polymer sealer
and deodorizer is applied through a ULV fogger inserted in
the holes. Thus forcing the distribution of the polymer sealer
throughout the entire system’s duct work.
• Once the encapsulation process is complete, the air
return and register filter covers are removed* and new filters
are installed into the system.
* If there is a possibility of recontamination, we may recommend
leaving the filter material over the vents until the restoration
is complete. |
